Romanowski - All Styles All Smiles EP
Jazz & Milk Recordings
It's been a while since Romanowski put out a silent reggae revolution with "Steady Rocking". Released by Future Primitive Sound, the record was like an independent survival kit for when the going gets tough. And the going only got tougher in the four years following that. It is then with great pleasure that we all welcome the "All Styles All Smiles" EP, now via Jazz & Milk Recordings.
Born in Switzerland but established in San Francisco, Romanowski is no stranger in the breaks arena. The man has been DJing since the age of 16, and has been in a number of bands, labels, and projects, including breaking and scratching to a Kate Moss event.
This vinyl EP is comprised of two tracks and their respective remixes. Side A opens in overtly Afro-Cuban fashion, with trumpets resonating through percussive funky jiggles. And it starts like this: "I was born in the 16th century during the colonization of my land. I'm descendant from the African... African". "Strudel Strut" then gets the remixing treatment by all-time favorites Up, Bustle & Out, and man, is it dope!
"Days and Daze" is a different cut altogether but no less nebulous. It's got an imperialistic drive with impatient drum beats, punctuated by a voice that states "you got another woman somewhere around". DJ Smash's reworking of the track is like every remix should be: slightly inspired on the original, it makes a dramatic detour and amplifies the vibe for the dance floor.
So, there you go, a treaty on the pains of colonization and adultery for party-goers to dance to!
