Arch_Typ - Muddy Rhythms

"Muddy Rhythms" is Arch_typ's appropriately titled second EP on Bagpak Records. When heard in its entirety and with no pauses of any sort, this 40-minute mix is a solid and pretty accurate account of soul music moving its funky butt to the dancefloor. Hailing from Harlem, Arch_typ (aka Charles Noel) serves three big slices of the finest hyperactive rhythms, which are then given the remixing treatment.

When putting out an EP that's filled up with dope beats and blips, the lesser of two evils would be to first accommodate the listener to a fluffy cushion of calm ambience, as opposed to discharging the bad-ass cuts right away. Truth be told, there's no proper introduction to a record like this; it obsessively drags you to the very depths of self-indulgence and luxury. And there's nothing wrong with that.

So, Arch_typ seems to have chosen to kick things off on a down note, delivering a number that is both glitch-friendly and wild at the soul-charged heart. Featuring Ahmad Larnes on vocals, "Letting Go" is like gritting your teeth through a little tedium before getting the good stuff. The latter reworking of the track expand on that notion, especially the deconstructed Yellowtail instrumental remix.

"I Wanna Be With You" is micro-house music at its most romantic and saccharine-fueled. Sarah White's vocals warm up the otherwise pretty cold backdrop of repetitive, mechanical sampling (the latter dub version of the track is a work of minutia that adds extra warmth to the equation). Next is a funk-charged "Slide Technique", an over-synthesized number that feels more humane as it evolves throughout its four and a half minutes.

Even though it simply consists of three tracks and their multiple re-treatments, this "Muddy Rhythms" EP never sounds too repetitive – just repetitive enough to keep your hips shaking.
